A Day in Asakusa
I recently spent the day in Asakusa and thought I would put together a little blog post about it. Before you go to Asakusa and especially to Sensoji Temple be sure to go across the street to the cultural center. On the eight floor is a free observatory where you can see the sky tree and a great view of the walk to the temple.
I love coming to this area even if it is super crowded. The path to the temple is filled with little shops with traditional gifts and souvenirs as well as amazing food. While you’re here make sure you explore some of the side streets near the main path cause the snacks around there are amazing.
MelonPan is really popular in Japan and is especially known for Asakusa near the Sensoji Temple. I know of at least three on the side streets on the way up the path towards the temple. It’s a really crunchy yet fluffy sweet bread. There is also an option to have it warm and filled with ice cream like a sandwich but I prefer it on its own.
The ice cream in this area is also amazing! I got green tea on this trip but I’ve also had an amazing peach ice cream around here too.
Recently a lot of the shops selling souvenirs have brought out these little wild boars for the new year. The zodiac animal this year is the boar, which makes me very excited because that is my zodiac and normally in the US it isn’t very cute. But here it is so sweet and adorable! I got this little guy which is a bell for good luck and just to make me smile. They’re super affordable too so if you’re looking for a gift consider these.
The observatory also has a cafe at the top where you can drink coffee or beer. They also have nice bathrooms and free wifi. So if you are in need of a little rest go sit in the waiting area of the observatory.
Be prepared to see a lot of people or couples dressed up in kimonos or yukatas. There are a lot of places around there to rent them but some people have their own. Also be prepared to see a lot people walking their dogs. For some reason this area is filled with a lot of dogs.
Look at how cute these two are dressed up for halloween! They’re both pumpkins!
