The Best Japanese Grocery Store in NYC

The Best Japanese Grocery Store in NYC

My fiancé and I recently went to the new Japan Village in Industry City Brooklyn. It is by far the best Japanese grocery store I’ve been to in New York. Most of the ones I know are fairly small and don’t have a lot of things you would really want from Japan like sauces or dressings. I find most of the time they usually have snacks and novelty things.

The Japan Village grocery store is actually a sunrise mart, there is another one in Midtown by the library. This one is much bigger and has everything you can imagine. The sauces, ramen and other things are really well priced the only thing over priced I’d say is some of the candy.

The ramen selection is amazing and the udon and individual noodles are really amazing. They also have so many amazing sauces too. They have a lot of frozen food and ice cream as well, like frozen gyoza or tempura.

I’d say even the candy is reasonably priced. The pocky is $2 and the jelly are like $4 so not too bad. I find kit kats that are the fun flavors to be overly priced everywhere in the US. But if you don’t mind spending the money they have a lot of halloween candy right now!

I was surprised to see the specialty flavors like salted lemon or peach mint. Normally it’s just green tea and strawberry kit kats. It’s nice to know if there is a new flavor you really wanted to try from Japan you could get them here.

They also have a lot of prepared dessert like mochi or cakes. I’m a big fan or dango and theres are so good and well priced.

The reason this is called Japan Village and not just another Sunrise Mart is because there is an attached food court with different vendors. Keep in mind the grocery store is open till 9 but the restaurants stop serving around 8 or 8:30. I didn’t get to photograph it but we went to lunch the next day. The ramen is really good here and I wanted to try the boba place but both times they were out of everything. The quality of the food depends on the vendor stall.

Also to note we went on a weekend mid day for lunch and it was extremely crowded. But don’t let that discourage you. There is seating inside the building but outside the mart as well as outside the building under tents. We ate outside and it was really nice. Industry city is really starting to change and become really interesting.
