How I Deal With Migraines

Four years ago I had my first migraine— it knocked me off my feet and left me stunned. I was in so much pain I could barely sleep it off. Laying in a dark room, unable to go to work or class, and all alone. I had no idea what to do to make it better and advil was doing nothing! Even the next day I felt like I had a migraine hangover, where I felt exhausted even though all I did was sit in the dark and sleep.

My migraines started to become more often as I finished my senior thesis and started working. I began keeping a headache tracker in my notes on my phone to see what might be causing them and I couldn’t pinpoint one thing. One trigger is the weather and when there is air pressure changes in the atmosphere. Usually two or three days before a snow or rain storm I start to get migraines.

Another trigger for me is using my screens a lot. While working in an office for long hours I started getting migraines after staring at my laptop all day. I got blue light glasses from eye buy direct, which helped me a lot! If I don’t wear these while I’m at work I’ll for sure get a migraine.

Recently I decided to see a specialist to see if I could get some more answers. The one thing we decided after talking was that my headaches are probably genetic and that there isn’t one thing that triggers them but a combination of things— the weather changes, dehydration, hormones, stress and screen time.

Together we decided after some blood tests that I have a b12 deficiency even though I eat meat on a regular basis. So I am not taking b12 for the deficiency and the migraines. The other thing he recommended was to start taking magnesium, he thinks that by taking this it could really help my migraines. After about six months I should see results if these are helping.

Ice packs are my best friend! My back hurts, my foot is swollen or a migraine I use one of these gel ice packs. When I feel a migraine coming on or when I am sleeping one off I put one of these on the back of my neck or on top of my head.

The other thing is to drink water! When I feel a migraine coming on I drink a huge bottle of water.

I also used to get acupuncture done for my migraines and some other issues I was having but obviously with the pandemic I can’t do that right now. I can’t wait till I can go back to doing it consistently and see if that helps again.

Now I know a lot of people are opinionated about essential oils and you are entitled to your opinion. But, here is mine. My mom has been using young living oils since before I was born. I’ve been using peace and calming literally all my life. I trust everything they make as being organic and the best quality. I know some people like dutera and I’m not going to get into that but I prefer young living.

I specifically use m-grain for my migraines. I like to use it because I can use it as much as I want all day. It leaves a cooling refreshed feeling. I place it on my temples, behind my ears down my neck and on the back of my neck. I also really like using peace and calming or stress away when I’m anxious or stressed or when I have a migraine.

I hope these helped you and if you suffer from migraines what are your tips and tricks? I’d love to know.
